Compatible devices

Your Mac and your PC, in either direction.

The computer you sit at is the Viewer. The one you reach is the Receiver. One app does both.

In testing

Phones and tablets: the Viewer

The iPhone, iPad and Android apps are with beta testers. They are not in the App Store or Google Play.

Apple

iOS 17 or later

iPhone and iPad

  • This app is the Viewer: it sees and controls your own Mac or PC, which runs the Matrix Remote Receiver.

  • An iPhone or iPad can't be controlled from elsewhere: Apple doesn't allow it. You can let a paired computer WATCH its screen: Share this iPhone (the button at the top left).

  • Pairing, Allow on the computer, the banner there and the encryption are exactly as between two computers.

Android

Android 10 or later

Android

  • This phone is the Viewer. The computer you reach is the Receiver: it runs Matrix Remote, and someone there says yes each time (or you use its access password).

  • On Android Matrix Remote is a Viewer only: nobody can see or control this phone with it.

Tested

Which pairs have been tested

  • Mac ↔ Mac: tested on Apple silicon Macs.

  • Mac ↔ Windows, in both directions: tested, mostly with virtual machines and through our relay.

  • Windows ↔ Windows: tested with virtual machines.

  • iPhone, iPad and Android phones as the Viewer, with a Mac or Windows Receiver: tested on simulators and emulators.

  • Intel Macs, macOS 14 and Windows 10 should work but have not been tested yet.

Windows

Differences on Windows today

  • Connect without asking (an access password) is Mac only for now. On Windows someone must press Allow every time.

  • Windows never lets anyone control admin (UAC) prompts remotely.

Not yet

Not supported

  • Linux: not yet.

  • Controlling an iPhone, iPad or Android phone: they are Viewers. An iPhone or iPad (iOS 17 or later) can let a paired computer watch its screen; an Android phone (Android 10 or later) can't be seen or controlled.

  • The login window: you must be logged in on the Receiver, with Matrix Remote running.

Networks

Networks

Same network and Tailscale are fastest. If a firewall blocks a direct connection, Matrix Remote goes through our relay automatically (once our relay checks licences: when the computer you connect to has a licence or is in its test period), as long as the network lets through port 3478 and our relay is reachable. Some office and hotel networks allow only web traffic (ports 80 and 443); there Matrix Remote can't connect yet.
